I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at length you have revived your concern for me. You were indeed concerned for me, but you had no opportunity. Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
Philippians 4:10-13, ESV
The Philippians concern for Paul had caused him to rejoice greatly. It had been a while since he’d heard from them and they hadn’t previously had an opportunity to put their concern into action.
Do we have this concern for our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ?
Do we show it where we have an opportunity to?
Paul had learned to be content in God, no matter what circumstances he found himself in. He didn’t let the world around him drag him down, or even let his imprisonment distract him, but he finds contentment in the one who never changes and gives him strength to do all things. He doesn’t describe this as something automatic or easy – it is something that he has had to learn, through his experience with God.
Where do you look for contentment?
How do we learn this secret of being content in every circumstance?
Pray that your contentment comes from Jesus and isn’t subject to the circumstances or your feelings
